Media personality and serial entrepreneur, Betty Kyallo, has taken legal action against renowned pop culture blogger, Edgar Obare, through her advocates Salyny Advocates LLP.
In a statement dated Monday, July 8, the news anchor and mother of one, said she was tired of the constant bad publicity her brand has suffered. She says she was prompted by other brands who took advantage of her quiet nature to drive traffic to their pages at her expense.
“I have decided to take legal action against people who defame me/my brand without any factual information. They do this for clicks, likes and views but it is extremely detrimental to all the hard work I’ve continuously put in over the years,” she said.
“There have to be consequences for such malicious actions. I will no longer tolerate such spiteful, evil- Intentionally, fake, and false stories against me,” she added.
Why is Betty Kyalo Suing Edgar Obare?
Betty accused Edgar Obare, who has been caught on the firing line severally, of false accusations against her and her partner on his IG page, BNN Africa. She also says her image and likeness were used without her consent. Edgar’s post on his BNN IG page alleged that Betty Kyallo and her “Ben 10” Charlie Jones, ran away with a bill at Silverstone Hotel. He asked fans to follow a link on his channel for proof, known as ‘receipts’ on the social media lingo. Betty clarified the situation and denied the accusations against her in the letter.
“On 7 July 2024, you caused to be published a sensational post and or story on your hereinabove-mentioned blog relating to our clients which post and or story was not only false but also defamatory, for proper clarity, you posted our clients’ photograph and captioned the same as hereunder,” the letter read in part.
Betty’s Demands and Cause of Action for Damages
In a demand clause, the TV47 news anchor, demands a full, unreserved, and unconditional retraction to be posted on the same blog and or Instagram page in terms to be approved by her and her legal team. She also wants the blogger to retract every false accusation they have made on their site in regards to her.
In addition, she demands a full and unconditional admission in writing of liability for defamation and immediate removal, deletion, and or expungement of her articles from his blog and or Instagram page. She also wants any stories, posts, and or comments in any form or shape made by Edgar to be gone. Failure to which by close of business on Friday 12, July, Betty would take legal actions against him.
Edgar Obare is notorious for leaking people’s personal information on social media. He has previously been arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over the same, early 2021. According to a statement by the DCI, Edgar coached Desy Oduor Achieng, Obare’s co-accused, to stalk a prominent governor to obtain KSh 10 Million.
DCI boss, Kinoti, said his detectives have uncovered an underworld dark network where young ladies were recruited by Obare, to stalk prominent personalities for monetary exploitation. We are yet to see if Betty’s demands will bear fruit.
