The 2024 Football Kenyan Federation (FKF) elections preparations are in top gear.
Candidates submitted their papers, and a total of 9 candidates have expressed interest in succeeding Nick Mwendwa.
Interestingly, the outgoing boss has submitted his papers with his running mate Doris Petra. Petra is the current FKF vice-president. Mwendwa exuded confidence in retaining the seat.
The seat has also attracted former FKF CEO Barry Otieno, Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohamed, head of youth football at FKF Chris Amimo, former Kenyan international Sammy ‘Kempes’, Mwendwa’s predecessor Sam Nyamweya, former FKF NEC member Tom Alila, Gor Mahia secretary general Sam Ocholla and Kakamega Homeboyz owner Cleophas Shimanyula.
FKF Presidency Eligibility Criteria
- At least five endorsements from any of the FKF members
- Must have played an active role in football either as a player, member, or an official of FKF in two of the last five years
- Must satisfy the requirements for leadership and integrity as per Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution.
FKF Presidential Aspirants
Nyamweya is back in the ring after being ousted by incumbent Nick Mwendwa in 2016. He has picked former Nairobi MCA, Patricia Mutheu, as his running mate. Mutheu was previously CEO of Mathare United.
Kakamega Homeboyz owner and chairman Cleophas Shimanyula has also expressed his interest in leading FKF. His running mate is Twaha Mbarak, the current vice chairman of Bandari FC. Mubarak was vice president under Sam Nyamweya.
Tom Alila, a former FKF National Executive Committee member for Nyanza, is also a contender. He has brought on board former coach and referee, Beryl Adhiambo, as his running mate.
Ocholla, the current Secretary General of Gor Mahia, also declared interest in the presidential seat. His running mate, Willis Waliaula, has served as team manager in several FKF Premier League clubs including Tusker FC, Sofapaka, and Posta Rangers.
Hussein Mohammed, CEO of Extreme Sports Limited, is also eyeing the FKF presidency. Mohamed is the vice chair of Murang’a Seal. officially unveiled his manifesto last Friday, but has been vocal about his ambition even before then. Former Harambee Stars captain, McDonald Mariga, is his running mate.
Immediate former FKF CEO Barry Otieno, who announced his resignation over the weekend, is in the race. He has picked on Nyandarua branch chair Lucy Kageni as his running mate.
The Final List
The final list of county and national candidates will then be known on November 2,
County elections will be held on November 9.
The 94 national delegates, who will be eligible to vote in the national elections, will be known two weeks before the presidential vote on December 7.
The deadline for submission of papers was on October 15th.
