The newly appointed CSs have been appearing before the National Assembly parliamentary committee for vetting. The vetting committee is chaired by Speaker Moses Wetangula. One requirement of the vetting process, for the nominees, is to declare their net worth and how they accumulated it.
Those who have appeared before the panel so far are Education Ministry nominee Julius Migos Ogemba, Defense nominee Soipan Tuya, Interior and National Administration Nominee Kithure Kindiki, Lands, Public Works, Housing & Urban Development Alice Wahome, and Health CS nominee Debra Mlongo Barasa.
Julius Ogomba, Education CS Nominee
Education Ministry nominee, Julius Migos Ogamba, told the parliamentary committee that he is worth KShs. 790M. Ogamba, 57, is a University of Nairobi graduate who pursued law and has been in practice for 31 years. He is currently the board chair of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen). The professional lawyer explained that he made his fortune from his law firm, land, sea, trees, farm equipment, and vehicles.
Soipan Tuya, Defense Ministry Nominee
Soipan Tuya who was previously worth KShs. 156M has grown her wealth to Ksh 243M within the 2 years. She declared that her wealth is tied to asset appreciation, businesses, and one asset that she has acquired in Nairobi.
Kithure Kindiki, Interior & National Administration CS Nominee
Kindiki, the Interior and National Administration Ministry nominee told the Wetang’ula-led committee that he’s cumulative worth KSh 694M. This includes his 2 homes, one in the rural area and his Nairobi residence. The other worth comes from his SACCO savings and a fleet of high-end vehicles with a total worth of KSh 17M. This translates to Sh7.1 million monthly income outside the salaries for the 21 months he was in office before he was dismissed from Cabinet alongside 20 others.
Kindiki however explained that the increase is a result of payment of legal fees that had been unpaid before his appointment in 2022.
Justin Muturi, Public Service CS Nominee
During his vetting before the National Assembly Committee, on Sunday, Justin Muturi, the Public Service Cabinet Secretary nominee, Justin Muturi, said he recorded “a slight adjustment” in his net worth. In October last year, when he was being vetted for the Attorney-General post, he declared it at Ksh.761M.
Eric Muuga, Water, Irrigation, and Sanitation CS Nominee
Water, Irrigation, and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary nominee Eric Muuga disclosed his net worth is KSh 31M when he appeared before the Committee on Tuesday, August 2. The youngest CS nominee revealed that acquired his fortune at 31, to the surprise of the vetting committee.
“My net worth is KSh 31M. I come from a region that is engaged in farming and invested in lands owned and planted crops like tea, coffee, bananas, and others,” Muuga told the committee. He put it on record that he doesn’t own a car but he chooses to focus on investments instead.
Muuga is duly registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya as a professional engineer and with the Institution of Engineers of Kenya as a corporate member.
Kipchumba Murkomen, Sports & Youth Affairs CS Nominee
While appearing before the National Assembly’s vetting committee on Saturday, August 3, the former Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary told the panel that his assets value appreciated by Sh 70 million in 21 months to amount to Kshs 620M currently.
“After I was approved as a CS in 2022, I took a mortgage of Sh 40 million and invested it, and besides that, my assets have generally appreciated by about Sh 20 million. Besides that, my assets have generally been appreciated. Based on the calculation of the index existing. I also got Sh 10 million in other earnings from farming and other businesses,” said Murkomen.
Murkomen’s displays of affluence in public has always attracted scrutiny from citizens who argued he might be living off the taxpayer’s money something he strongly opposed.
John Mbadi, Treasury CS Nominee
Mbadi who is a seasoned politician and ODM strongman, is currently estimated at Ksh 380M. The figure has been attracting scrutiny from citizens since being proposed for the Treasury position. He is a former MP and currently a nominated MP.
The University of Nairobi alumni has a Master of Business Administration. According to him, his wealth has been amassed through various professional engagements. He adds that he has not done business with the government or been involved in any shady deals.
His political leadership positions include being an MP three times, leader of the minority, and an assistant minister from 2012 to 2013.
