Nyandarua Senator Methu John Biography

John Methu Muhia, the senator of Nyandarua, is now a popular name owing to his populist political style. Born on February 14th, 1991, and raised in Kinangop constituency, the senator is now 34 years old. He holds the distinction of being the youngest Senator in Kenya’s 13th Parliament.

Education

In 2017, John Methu Muhia graduated from Pwani University with a degree in Political Science. He also attended Goshen High School (Nakuru) for his KCSE and Heni Primary School (Nyandarua) for his KCPE.

Political Career

Before his election to the Senate in 2022, Methu served in the Nyandarua County Assembly as Personal Secretary to the then Nyandarua Speaker, James Wahome Ndegwa. His political journey had begun a year earlier (the 2017 general election), though, with a failed attempt for the same Nyandarua Senate seat in 2017 under the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party. He lost to Githiomi Mwangi, the County’s second senator.

Family

Senator Methu is married to Florence Mbugua, and they have at least two children. He is a total orphan, having lost his mother in 2018 and his father, Michael Maigo Waweru, in 2023.

Politics

Methu defeated incumbent Senator Mwangi Githiomi and lawyer Kinyanjui Theuri in the primary elections. To the surprise of many, he won the general election, garnering 185,337 votes. This made him the youngest person ever elected to the Senate at the age of 31.

Methu is now a household name in the Kenyan political scene. Having been elected on William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the now defiant leader has attracted both support and opposition from Kenyans.

His recent exchange with Kapseret Member of Parliament, Oscar Sudi, regarding President Ruto’s Mt Kenya tour has caused nationwide buzz from netizens. Sudi accused his counterpart of being untidy. In his response, the senator accused the Rift Valley MP of smelling and even shared a video to support his allegations.

The Senator’s signature hairy face had been a target for his political opponents until he decided to shave. According to him, being hairy was a source of wisdom following a Swahili saying that says akili ni nywele (hair is brain).
