Actress, author, and producer Taraji P. Henson hosted this year’s BET Awards. This was her crowning moment as far as celebrating Black excellence in entertainment. The Awards ceremony was held at Peacock Theater on June 30, 2024, in Los Angeles, California.
Tyla, the South African superstar, was this year’s overall African winner and was highlighted at the BETs, after scooping two awards. The Water hitmaker was awarded Best International Act against his fellow African stars like Asake (Nigeria), Aya Nakamura (France), Ayra Starr (Nigeria) and Focalistic (South Africa). Her chart-topping single Water had also been nominated for Viewer’s Choice Award but lost to Beyonce’s Texas Hold Em.
The petite singer also went home with Best New Artist, beating her nemesis Ayra Starr, who was also nominated in the same category.
Tems, another African favorite, walked away with Dr. Bobby Jones’s Best Gospel/Inspirational Award for her single Me n U, beating seasoned gospel music stars like Kirk Franklin (who was nominated twice in that category) and Cece Winans.
One of the most competitive categories is usually Album of The Year. The honor went to hip-hop powerhouse, Killer Mike. His sixth studio album, Michael, maintained its winning streak after he won a Grammy Award for the same earlier this year. The trophy was presented by nominee and guest performer Childish Gambino. He beat heavyweights like Chris Brown (11:11), Drake (For All The Dogs), and Usher (Coming Home).
Usher’s BET Lifetime Achievement Award
Another crowning moment was R&B icon Usher’s “Lifetime Achievement Award”. Industry legends Baby Face, L.A. Reid, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis were honored to present it to him. A star-studded tribute, including a medley of his hits, was performed by Chlöe Bailey, Childish Gambino, KeKe Palmer, CoCo Jones, Tinashe, and Latto. The industry icon also took home the trophy for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist.
