Kenya’s most popular comedy show is set to return to Nation Media Group (NMG)’s NTV. The announcement was made at a cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the return of the comedy show, two years after the show took a long break and moved to another station. Churchill Show premiered on NTV in 2007 until February 2022 when Churchill reportedly had contract disagreements with Nation Media Group (NMG).
Churchill, Daniel Ndambuki, is considered the ‘father’ of the modern comedy industry. Through the show, he introduced the careers of many comedians like Eric Omondi, Fred Omondi, YY, MCA Tricky, Mammito Eunice, Professor Hamo, Butita and Zeddy Zainabu.
The show left NTV two years ago for Cape Media’s TV47. However, it did not last long there and went off the air later. No further details were divulged. This disappointed many comedy fans. NTV said that the decision was driven largely by fans of the program who have been asking for the return of the comedy show for a long time.
A New Lease Of Life
The epic return of the show to this national TV will be a new lease of life for the comedy industry, which has been struggling since the onset of the pandemic. The popular comedian and radio host believes they still have something to offer Kenyans even though comedy ratings in the country are struggling in recent years.
“I think we are going through a very interesting season as a country, and there is a need to release that stress. There may not be much to celebrate, but there is something about the show. The show is a ministry, so every time it is on TV, it brings joy,” Churchill added.
The return is scheduled for July 13th, 8 PM. Churchill assured viewers of a revamped experience with new segments and surprises. According to Churchill, there will be a national tour once it peaks. MC Jessy, who hosted Churchill Raw, a baby of the main show, revealed plans to remain in a competitive position and capture the national psyche again:
“Auditions must happen, we are going to go as per what people want. We have a whole new team and they will get the right talent as per this generation. We are working with a lot of young guys and the show will complement with social media,” said Jesse.
Churchill Show: An Award-winning Show
The show has earned several awards, including CHAT (Chaguo La Teeniez Awards), UK Kenya Achievers Award For Excellence In Comedy, Sanaa Theatre Awards, and Kalasha Awards in various categories, among them Best TV Program Overall and Best Comedy Program.
