The leading telecommunications company in Kenya, Safaricom, has announced new and improved internet speeds and prices. Internet connectivity has fast become a mainstay of economic and social activities. This has increased the need for fast data transfer and processing as well as online entertainment.
The internet caters to both homes and businesses and will cater to the rising demand for faster connectivity in Kenya.
CEO’s Statement
CEO Peter Ndegwa emphasized that the new speeds will support demanding online tasks such as 4K/8K streaming, gaming, large file transfers, cloud computing, and virtual reality (VR).
“The needs of our Enterprise customers are changing each day with the growing need to use technology. The enhanced fibre for business plans will allow our enterprise customers have a worry-free experience with the provision of back up data,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said in a statement.
“We have enhanced our Home Internet speeds to cater to the increased demand and usage by offering reliable connectivity and enhanced value for our customers. The introduction of the new speeds offers the capability of handling the most demanding online activities with ease, including high-definition streaming 4K/8K, gaming, large file transfers, cloud computing, and virtual reality,” Ndegwa added.
New Internet Speeds
Some of the major competitors are Starlink, Airtel, Zuku, and Faiba, among others. Starlink’s entry into the Kenyan market has significantly disrupted the market. They are providing high-speed packages and what many consider cheap costs for the associated speeds.
Notably, Safaricom’s Diamond package and Starlink’s unlimited broadband internet plans reach speeds of up to 100 Mbps. However, the prices differ significantly.
Safaricom platinum package will offer speeds of up to 1000 Mbps for KSh 20,000.
The Diamond Package now provides unlimited broadband internet speed of up to 500MBps for KSh 12,499.
The Gold package speeds have doubled from 40 to 80MBps and goes for 6,299.
The Silver package of 30mbps goes for Kshs 4,100. On the other side, the bronze package goes for Kshs 2, 999 at 15MBps up from 10MBps.
Safaricom increased the internet speeds of its Wi-Fi packages to enhance its competitiveness amid stiff competition from Starlink. Its entry into the Kenyan market disrupted the telecommunications sector by offering high-speed internet packages at competitive prices.
Contrary to widespread social media reports, Safaricom has made it clear that it has not reduced the prices of its internet packages. Through an official statement, it clarified that it has only increased the speeds associated with each package.
