MaEX by Butita: Why Every Kenyan Must Watch

To make a good film, you need three things: first, the script, second, the script, and third, the script.

These were the words of Sir Alfred Hitchcock, an English filmmaker widely regarded as one of the most influential people in the history of scriptwriting.

While it’s easy to argue over what makes a great scriptwriter, one thing stands out; originality. This among other factors is what makes a good film.

Our Kenyan industry is blessed with some of the best writers but one person has stood out with his unique style of writing that is both informative, enjoyable, and captivating. That person is Edwin Butita, popularly known as Eddie Butita or just Butita.

He has written many scripts not only locally but internationally and made history when a show he directed became the first Swahili comedy show to be streamed on Netflix.

Locally, Butita is a household name in the Film industry. Apart from commercially writing scripts for other big names he also writes for himself through his YouTube Channel.

One show, Maex (My exes) has caught my attention and I want to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to watch. This short film will change your perspective about Kenyan content creators as well as make you appreciate our local content.

Maex features some of the best actors in the country. Talk of Jackie Vike, Aicy Stevens (Essy), Ann Stela Karimi (Clara), Keranta (K), Diana Luvanda, Mitch, Kapedo, and Stella.

If you don’t know who some of these people are, it’s another reason why you need to watch and I can promise you that you won’t regret your time.

MA EX EPISODE 1 DRAMA ZA BABY MAMA

Essy (Aicy Stevens), the main character in the episode is that dramatic baby mama who can’t move on. She does everything to make sure Brian Kamishna (Butita) doesn’t have peace.

In this episode, she goes to an extent of using a drone to monitor Kamishna’a moves. When Brian Kamishna feels his life and that of his new catch are threatened and decides to report to a police station, a shift occurs…

MA EX EPISODE 2 DAWA YA EX NI EX

They say set a thief to catch a thief. This is what Kamishna tries to implement in this episode but unfortunately, the hunter becomes the hunted as he is nailed down in his own trap after he was misadvised by his friends.

What he does here is bring in his baby mama, Essy, to help drive out Jackie Vike from his house. The end is more dramatic than you would think. Watch it here.

The Rich Ex

MA EX EPISODE 3 UKORA ZA KUOMBA EX WAKO PESA

Getting over your ex is hard and especially when they are rich. Every time you are broke and your mind hit out at that one ex who used to spoil you like an orphan. This is who Clara was to Brian Kamishna.

Brian’s goose has been cooked and he wants to leave although he does not have money. He goes to Clara’s house to withdraw some dollars, as always. However, this time is different as Clara demands Brian should earn his money. She asks him to wash utensils and because there’s no way out, Brian does it. You should him do it.

This episode ends when Keranta (K), the scandalous ex threatens to leak Brian’s nudes. Brian has to promise him KES 50,000 which he doesn’t have. Sema Kimeumana (It’s tough) but a man must find a way, always.

EX WAKO AKIPATA VISA Ma Ex Episode 4

This one is top-notch. Jackie Vike has gotten a Visa to go to the US and Brian won’t let her go alone. He immediately becomes the best and most romantic man ever lived. Mr. Romeo himself. All this because he wants to use Jackie to move to the US. I don’t want to tell you how it ends as you will call me a spoiler.

This is just one among many scripts done by the guru. You need to subscribe to his channel to continue enjoying the great content. A special mention to the actors, each of them for the good work. You all deserve Oscars.
